The annual Shawnee Home and Garden Show was in full swing Saturday at the Expo Center as local companies displayed their wares and services for a public itching to get outside and start gardening.
Those in attendance could peruse anything from paintings by local artists to energy-saving windows to health care products. They could shop for gardening shoes, gloves and some of the latest cultivators, trowels, transplanters and weeders available. There was even a local company who claimed to be able to restore old, tattered photographs.
And, of course, patrons could get advice about how to landscape their property or yards by any number of landscaping experts on hand, including staff from the OSU Extension.
Kay Snake, grower for Shawnee-based Complete Landscape and Design, said the annual Home and Garden Show serves as unique catalyst for gardening enthusiasts.
“It gives the season a jump-start,” Snake said. “It gets spring in the minds of people, even though most of them are already looking and know what they’re wanting.”
Snake said people usually ask questions about how to tend to the plants, whether they’re evergreens and if they need to be in the shade or in the sun.
On Saturday, organizers brought in local artist Linda Dixon, Kim Rebek and Shawnee Master Gardener Tom Terry to give presentations. Dixon gave her presentation, “Art that fools the eye. You can do it, too,” twice Saturday, as did Rebek, host of OETA’s “Oklahoma Gardening.” Rebek’s presentation was titled, “Why wait? Tricks to give your garden a head start.”
Terry, longtime leader of landscaping and beautification efforts in Shawnee, gave his presentation, “A year in the yard, color for all season,” later in the day.
In addition to gardening exhibits, numerous other companies and individuals, including wood makers, scent makers, fencing companies, stone masons and homemade jewelers, also had displays on hand. There were also gardening books on sale at the show.
The Home and Garden Show, which started Friday, will wrap up today. The show is free to the public and food and drink are available at the concession stand.
The event was made possible by the Greater Shawnee Area Chamber of Commerce Beautification Committee and the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center. Sponsors include Citizen Potawatomi Nation, Shawnee Convention and Visitors Bureau, Shawnee Council of Garden Clubs, The News-Star and Unity Health Center.
