Baltimore seeks
WNBA franchise
BALTIMORE (AP) — Mayor Sheila Dixon says she has met with WNBA representatives to discuss the possibility of moving a franchise to Baltimore once a new downtown arena is built.

Former Olympic gold medalist to coach
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A former Olympic gold-medal sprinter is now an assistant coach for the Tennessee Lady Volunteers’ track and field team.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Former NBA star Latrell Sprewell is getting his home back.
The bank holding his mortgage foreclosed on his home in the Milwaukee suburb of River Hills in May, after Sprewell defaulted on his payments.
The house — worth more than $667,000 — was set to go to a sheriff’s sale, but a lawyer for RBS Citizens Bank says Sprewell paid the bank the amount he owed.
Filings show he owed about $320,000, and it’s unclear whether he refinanced or paid the full amount.
Attorney Jeffrey Cooper says he filed a motion with the Milwaukee County Circuit Court asking that the foreclosure judgment be vacated.
In January, the Milwaukee native’s 70-foot yacht, named “Milwaukee’s Best,” was sold at auction for $856,000 to a man from Milwaukee.

NEW YORK (AP) — David Wright of the New York Mets will replace injured Alfonso Soriano of the Chicago Cubs on the National League All-Star roster.

Soriano, on the disabled list since June 12 with a broken left hand, will attend the festivities.

BEIJING (AP) — Canine cuisine is being sent to the doghouse during next month’s Beijing Olympic Games.
Dog meat has been struck from the menus of officially designated Olympic restaurants, and Beijing tourism officials are telling other outlets to discourage consumers from ordering dishes made from dogs, the official Xinhua News Agency reported Friday.
Waiters and waitresses should “patiently” suggest other options to diners who order dog, it said, quoting city tourism bureau Vice Director Xiong Yumei.
Dog, known in Chinese as “xiangrou,” or “fragrant meat,” is eaten by some Chinese for its purported health-giving qualities.
Beijing isn’t the first Olympic host to slap a ban on the dish.
South Korea banned dog meat during the 1988 Seoul Olympics by invoking a law prohibiting the sale of “foods deemed unsightly.” After the Olympics, the ban was not strictly enforced.
Dog meat is also eaten in some other Asian countries, including Vietnam, the Philippines and Laos.
