Two Oklahoma Baptist starters held out of Tuesday night’s 83-67 victory over visiting St. Gregory’s will be available for action tonight when the Bison entertain Rogers State at the Noble Complex.
Starters Nate Brumfield and Kevin Swinton missed the St. Gregory’s contest, along with reserve Mirko Vojinovic, because of disciplinary reasons.
Brumfield, a 6-foot-5-inch senior out of Rochester, N.Y. and Hutchinson Community College, heads the Bison in four categories: scoring (22.6), rebounds (8.3), assists (3.8) and steals (2.3). Swinton is averaging a team-high 1.7 blocks.
Marty O’Gwynn, Oklahoma Baptist University Associate Vice President for University Communications, said, “The suspensions were a student disciplinary matter and OBU does not discuss student disciplinary actions.”
OBU, ranked second nationally behind Mountain State, is 21-1 overall and 14-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. The Bison are in second place in the SAC behind Southern Nazarene (15-1).
Rogers State, out of Claremore, is in sixth place in the 12-team SAC field at 8-7 and is 15-8 overall.
In a Jan. 16 game at Rogers State, OBU prevailed 86-83 behind 24 points from A.J. Hawkins and 20 from Brumfield. Rogers missed a 3-point field-goal attempt at the final buzzer.
Sylvester Spicer, who leads Rogers State in scoring at 15.2 point per game, didn’t play in the first outing against OBU.
The Bison have captured 37 consecutive home-court victories dating back to a loss to Oklahoma Christian on Feb. 7, 2008.
The men’s game is ticketed for an 8 p.m. start following the 6 p.m. women’s contest.
OBU’s Lady Bison, 21-2 overall, are tied with Oklahoma City for the conference top spot at 14-1.
Taujhnae Travvis, a 5-foot-7-inch senior out of Humble, Texas, and San Jacinto Junior College, is OBU’s leader in scoring (16.8), rebounds (6.7) and assists (3.5).
Ashley Harrell heads OBU in steals (2.1) and blocks (1.5).
The Lady Bison have captured four straight victories, all at home, since dropping a 68-60 decision at Oklahoma City. Coach John McCullough’s Lady Bison have a 45-game winning streak at the Noble Complex, having last tasted defeat on Feb. 22, 2007, at the hands of Northwestern Oklahoma State.
Currently ranked fourth nationally, OBU inflicted a 70-54 defeat on Rogers State in the earlier matchup in Claremore. Travis and Gabi Mattox were the offensive ringleaders for the victors with 16 points each as OBU outshot the hosts, 58 percent to 29 percent.
The Hillcats, 16-7 overall and 8-7 in the SAC, are led in scoring by Jenny Hardin at 14.9. Rogers State has sole possession of seventh place in the SAC.
OBU will travel to Siloam Springs, Ark., Saturday to take on John Brown in another SAC confrontation. The women’s game will begin at 1 p.m. with the men’s game at 3 p.m.
