SHAWNEE, Okla. —

By Fred Fehr
Over the past month, Shawnee’s volleyball chemistry — and its ensuing production — haven’t been on par with its Class 5A fourth-place ranking.
Coach Jessica Palmer’s squad will try and right the ship today as the host team for a regional tournament.
“The past month has been rocky,” Palmer said. “We will see if our serve-receive and defense will be on. We have been struggling lately.”
Struggle or not, Shawnee is the top regional seed and will clash with fourth-seeded Capitol Hill today at 4:30 p.m. at Oklahoma Baptist University’s Noble Complex. The other first-round matchup will find second-seeded Deer Creek up against third-seeded Tecumseh at 6 p.m.
Shawnee hasn’t played Capitol Hill this season but does own victories over Deer Creek (25-14, 25-14, 25-4) and Tecumseh (25-13, 25-17, 25-11).
The regional championship match is set for tonight at 7:30.
The top eight ranked teams earned regional host berths. Each regional winner will advance to the state tournament Oct. 17-18. The Oct. 17 action is set for Choctaw with the Oct. 18 matches slated for Moore.
