TULSA — Chandler’s Jon Gray had a hand in preserving a 5-3 victory for the Large East, while the Small East riddled the Small West 19-4 in Monday’s All-State baseball games at Oral Roberts University’s J.L. Johnson Stadium.
Dale standouts Turner Coon and Dalton Streber were among the Small East’s players.
“They’re great kids,” said Dale head coach Jerry Sanford, who began coaching Coon and Streber during their freshman year.
“It’s good to see them grow up and do well,” Sanford said.
Coon supplied a triple in his third at-bat Monday, while Streber paced the Small East with a 4-for-5 outing that included a pair of doubles and four runs batted in.
The Small East wasted no time in upping the ante, pouring in seven runs in the first inning. Three more runs were added in the second, and the East “went to swinging for home runs,” Sanford said.
Eight more runs were tallied in the sixth.
“It could’ve been worse,” Sanford said of the outcome. “It was just one of those years when the East was loaded. It was a landslide.”
It was the most one-sided win in the history of the All-State games, and was the fifth in a row for the Small East.
In the large schools match, Shawnee’s Saulyer Saxon played at left field for four innings. In a 1-for-2 performance at the plate, Saxon swatted an RBI single in the first frame before lining out to the outfield in his last at-bat.
On the mound, Gray — who has signed with Oklahoma — faced a one-out, bases-loaded situation in the sixth inning. He avoided further damage by consecutively fanning Lawton MacArthur’s Tanner Rainey and Guthrie’s Jaden Chappell.
It was the fourth consecutive win for the Large East.
