Consider one of the premiere young women’s basketball players in Kenya, Purity Odhiambo has signed to play basketball at Oklahoma Baptist University.
Mentored by the nation’s top coach, Philip Onyango, Odhiambo is expected to have an immediate impact on the team when she begins playing as a freshman in 2010.
“Purity is a very strong, athletic player with a lot of potential,” said OBU coach John McCullough. “She is the best young player in Kenya and plays very hard and is a tough competitor. She has been very well coached and is has gotten a good education at Shimba Hills.”
Odhiambo led Shimba Hills High School to the Kenya championship with an undefeated record. She averaged 48 points and 14 rebounds, taking Shimba Hills to the Kavala District, Costa Province and East African Secondary School titles. Odhiambo had multiple 70-point games.
She played for Onyango on the Kenya national team which cruised to the East Africa Games championship and served as captain of the Junior African Games (under 18) Kenyan team.
At 6-1, Odhiambo is considered by some to be the best forward in Kenya. She was named MVP of the Basketball Beyond Borders Camp.
