STROUD—The Stroud Tigers scored early and often then held on for a thrilling 52-47 win over the Cashion Wildcats Friday night at Jack Poskey Field.
Offense was the story of this game as both teams combined for 99 points and 879 yards, and Stroud senior running back Cody Pritchard was the brightest star.
Pritchard ran the ball 36 times for an amazing 325 yards and scored five times.
“He’s a special player,” said Stroud head coach Chris Elerick. “He could probably do that every week if he had that many carries.”
The running game for Stroud was impressive, but equally impressive was the Tiger pass attack. Quarterback Andrew Miller threw only six times, but completed four of them with three of the four going for touchdowns. He finished with 161 yards through the air.
Stroud jumped to an early 21-0 lead after 17 minutes of play. The first score came on a 31-yard strike from Miller to Dakota Biswell and the second on an electrifying 43-yard scoring dash by Pritchard. Austin Billingslea completed the trifecta on a 56-yard reception with 7:07 left in the half.
Cashion finally got on the board with 3:30 left in the half on a 14-yarder by running back Colin Willis to bring the count to 21-7.
Stroud answered with a one-play, 65-yard dash by Pritchard to up the ante to 28-7 with 3:16 left in the half.
Cashion scored on a Jeremy Seaton 3-yard plunge to bring the Wildcats within 28-14 at the half.
The start of the third quarter looked as if the Tigers would blow the doors off of the hinges.
Stroud recovered a Seaton fumble on Cashion’s first play from scrimmage in the second half and took full advantage. Miller found Biswell on a 35-yard pitch and catch to increase the lead to 34-14 with 11:41 eft in the third.
Cashion then fumbled the ensuing kickoff on its own 38-yard line and Pritchard scored from 7 yards just three plays later to give Stroud a 40-14 advantage.
Cashion wouldn’t quit.
The Wildcats drove 80 yards on their next possession which was capped by a 1-yard run by Seaton, cutting the lead to 40-20 with 6:23 left in the third. They then gave the Tigers a dose of their own medicine, recovering the onside kick at the Stroud 49 yard line. It took just three plays to cut the Tiger lead to 40-26 on a Seaton-to-Britt Besler touchdown pass with 5:35 remaining in the quarter.
Pritchard wasn’t done.
He then carried the ball eight times for 51 yards and scored on an 11-yard scamper to up Stroud’s lead to 46-26 with 31 seconds left in the third quarter.
The Cashion Wildcats just wouldn’t go away. They scored on their next possession on Seaton’s second touchdown pass of the game, this time to Austin Phippen from 11 yards out. That cut the deficit to 48-32 with 10:56 left.
That’s when it got scary close for the Tigers.
Stroud couldn’t come up with a handle on the onside kick and Cashion needed just one 27-yard run by Seaton to make the count 46-41 with 10:38 remaining in the game.
But just like he had all game long, Pritchard came up big. He hit pay dirt for the final time from 25 yards out with 7:59 left in the game, upping the score to 52-41.
The heavyweight fight wasn’t over as the Wildcats then answered, again, on a 9-yard run by Willis with 5:16 left — leaving the score hanging in the balance at 52-47.
The Tigers then marched to the Cashion 11-yard line, burning up 3:10 of precious clock time. The Tigers were then faced with a fourth-and-2, but fumbled the snap and Cashion’s Cory Palmer recovered with 1:50 left.
The Tiger defense then stiffened and forced two incompletions — the final one on fourth down — sending Stroud into the Class A semifinals next weekend. Stroud will face Oklahoma Bible Academy with the date and time to be determined.
