Tom Catlin, a standout football player at the University of Oklahoma in the 1950s and former defensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks, has died. Catlin was 76.
Catlin died Saturday at a hospice facility in Seattle, Wash., from complications stemming from a recent surgery, said his brother, Charles Catlin of Broken Arrow.
Catlin played center and linebacker at OU from 1950-1952 after earning All-State accolades in 1949 as a senior at Ponca City High School.
A member of OU’s 1950 squad that won the national championship under head coach Bud Wilkinson, Catlin was named all-conference three times and was co-captain with quarterback Eddie Crowder during his senior year.
Bison add one
Oklahoma Baptist University has added Wichita Falls High School standout Santana Torres to the 2008-09 squad.
Torres will run the 400-meters and relay events for the Lady Bison. She holds school records in the 800 and 1,600 relays and qualified for regionals in the 400 her senior season.
Torres also is a four-time regional qualifier in the 400 and 800 and a three-time regional qualifier in the 1,600. She was named Most Outstanding Athlete at WFHS.
Holliday activated
DENVER (AP) — The Colorado Rockies returned some pop to their lineup Tuesday as Matt Holliday was activated off the disabled list.
The All-Star outfielder has been out since straining his left hamstring on May 24 while running out a grounder. To make room for him on the roster, the Rockies optioned outfielder Seth Smith to Triple-A Colorado Springs.
“I’m back and I feel good,” said Holliday, who was in the starting lineup Tuesday night against San Francisco.
Disgraced ref points finger
NEW YORK (AP) — A disgraced NBA referee says his fellow refs broke league rules by routinely fraternizing with players, coaches and team management.
A letter filed Tuesday in Brooklyn by a lawyer for Tim Donaghy in his federal gambling case alleges the inappropriate relationships influenced the outcomes of games. He claims one general manager in 2004 made a game-day phone call to referees to encourage them to call more personal fouls against an opponent.
Crawford fired as L.A. Kings coach
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Marc Crawford was fired as coach of the The Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday after his team finished with the fewest points in the Western Conference this season.
He spent two seasons with the team and had a year left on his contract.
Kings president and general manager Dean Lombardi said the team appreciated Crawford’s commitment.
Kansas loses two
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas defensive tackle Todd Haselhorst and cornerback Anthony Webb will not return to the team for the 2008 season.
Haselhorst, a senior, left the program to tend to personal matters. He had 17 tackles last year, including four against Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl.
Webb, a junior, has been dismissed for violating team policy. He had two tackles in 10 games and returned 19 punts for 16 yards.
NASCAR sued for harassment
As an aspiring racing official, Mauricia Grant had grown used to working in a man’s world.
When she finally made it into NASCAR, Grant was appalled at the way she says she was treated beginning from her first day on the job until her firing last October.
Now she’s suing NASCAR for $225 million, alleging racial and sexual discrimination, sexual harassment and wrongful termination.
U.S.A. to pick Olympic team without tryout
So much for the training camp competition for the final spots on the Olympic team. The United States will pick its squad without a tryout.
The Americans have changed their plans and will select the 12 players headed to Beijing before they report to Las Vegas later this month. The original idea called for the team to have potentially 16 players in camp and cut down to 12 on June 30.
