Forced to start four freshmen, Shawnee’s 10th-ranked wrestlers dropped a 52-15 decision to second-ranked Collinsville Saturday afternoon in first-round action of the Class 5A dual state tournament at Yukon High School.
Collinsville, the defending 5A dual and tournament state champions, recorded five falls and one major decision.
Shawnee was on the receiving end of forfeit wins at 182 (Gage Humphrey) and 220 (Mike Womack). Corey Todd, Shawnee’s 145-pound entry, posted a 6-3 triumph over Issac Dyer.
“I thought we were a little intimidated by them for some reason,” Shawnee coach Larry James said. “We have some people who didn’t take care of business this week, whether it be grades or their weight issues. You can’t do that against the defending state champions.
“We have one week for those guys who didn’t do what they were supposed to do to get it together and I know they will. We will be ready for regionals next week at Claremore.”
The regional is slated for Friday and Saturday. The top four finishers in each weight division qualify for the state tournament Feb. 24-25 in Oklahoma City.
Collinsville went on to successfully defend its dual championship, defeating McAlester 52-17 in the semifinals and Altus 42-12 in the finals.
