When Billy Brown assesses tonight’s scrimmage, he will definitely be looking for an upgrade in one department. “Our run blocking has to get better,” said Brown on the eve of a scrimmage versus McAlester at Hook Eales Stadium in McAlester.
That was one of the few areas that drew even a mild frown from Brown at last Friday night’s scrimmage versus Tecumseh. Shawnee dominated the visitors, holding the Savages scoreless while accumulating 294 yards.
“We have some inexperience in our offensive line but that will come with more repetitions,” Brown said.
Brown hopes his defense will experience another quality outing. Tecumseh didn’t record any gain longer than seven yards against the Wolves.
“All of the defensive guys played well,” Brown said.
Brown didn’t know much about McAlester’s individual players but said third-year head coach Bryan Pratt likes to spread the field on offense. McAlester employs a no-huddle offense.
Shawnee and McAlester, which split district contests the last two years, were realigned in different districts for the 2008 campaign.
Shawnee had originally planned to be part of the Carl Albert Preview but a change was necessitated because Shawnee and Carl Albert are now members of the same district.
“We had to get any scrimmage we could get,” Brown said.
Shawnee will launch the 2008 season Sept. 5 at Chickasha in a non-district challenge.
“We haven’t seen Chickasha on film or anything but they are definitely a playoff team in their district,” Brown said. “I know they have a new quarterback and tailback.”
Shawnee recorded three-hour practices Monday and Tuesday, then worked out about an hour Wednesday.
The freshman squad will kick off today’s scrimmage at 5:30 with the junior-varsity going at 6:30 and the varsity at 7:30.
Shawnee will open the 2008 campaign Friday, Sept. 5 at Chickasha in a non-district encounter. The home opener for the Wolves is Sept. 12 versus Deer Creek.
