With the game knotted at 61 apiece, the Shawnee Wolves had a final shot to escape with a much-needed road win over the Western Heights Jets and senior Dejoun Sanders took full advantage of the opportunity.
The Wolves, with 18 seconds remaining, worked the ball in to Sanders who delivered with a left-side baseline jumper with :04 left to secure the 63-61 win for the Wolves.
Sanders finished the contest with a team-high 24 points. Dillion Mooreland hit for 21 and Tyler Case added a dozen for the Wolfpack.
“We really did a good job against their zone in the first half,” said Shawnee head coach Ron Arthur. “We built an 18-point lead in the first half but relaxed and turned the ball over too much in the second half.”
The Wolves held an 18-6 advantage after the first quarter and built the lead to 32-19 at intermission.
The Wolves led the entire game but were tied twice in the contest, with the first coming at 56. Tim Tullis, who scored a game-high 31 points for Western Heights, hit a driving layup with :18 to knot the score at 61.
Tullis had 29 of his total in the second half.
After the Sanders jumper, the Jets had one final shot but a 3-pointer bounced off of the back of the rim as the buzzer sounded.
In the first game of the night, the Lady Wolves ran their record to a perfect 18-0 with a convincing 61-39 win over the Lady Jets. The Lady Wolves were led by the trio of Taylor Cooper, Kelsee Grovey and Micaela Yu.
Bailey Taylor hit two treys in the first half to break the game wide open for the Lady Wolves.
The Wolves squads will next set their sights on homecoming. The festivities will begin 6 p.m. Friday, followed by the boys game against Piedmont at 6:30 p.m. The Lady Wolves will play at 8 p.m.
