OKLAHOMA CITY — Meeker’s 2009 season came to a halt Friday night as defending Class 2A champion Heritage Hall dished out a 35-0 final in the first round of the postseason.
The Chargers’ Barry Sanders Jr. — son of legendary NFL running back Barry Sanders — collected three touchdowns and 65 yards on just eight rushes. He also scored on a 58-yard completion from quarterback Cooper Cloud en route to accumulating 116 yards on five receptions.
The Bulldogs were limited to seven first downs and 147 yards of total offense, including 65 on the ground and 82 via air mail. The unranked Chargers racked up 11 first downs, 105 rushing yards and 188 passing yards.
Sanders opened the scoring with a 9-yard run late in the first quarter, and the 7-0 lead held through halftime. A blocked punt was returned early in the third quarter to put the hosts up 14-0, and Sanders’ 34-yard scoring run with 8:26 left in the third put the Chargers up by 21 points.
Sanders ended the scoring at the 3:55 mark in the third on a 10-yard scamper.
The Bulldogs, who made it to the postseason by virtue of a series of forfeits by Jones, end their season at 5-6. The Longhorns had to give up six season victories, including five district wins, after the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association ruled they had employed an ineligible player.
This was Meeker’s first visit to the postseason in almost 10 years.
