The Oklahoma Baptist soccer teams got their seasons started Thursday on a victorious note against Texas College.
OBU’s men prevailed 2-1 on goals by Sullivan Silva and Taizo Kasuya. Kasuya scored on a penalty kick after teammate Elcio Freitas was tackled in the box. On the penalty shot, Kasuya’s attempt was blocked by the keeper, but the carom came right back to Kasuya, who finished the decisive play.
OBU keeper Jacob Hubbard gave up just one goal.
“We gave up some chances and we missed some opportunities,” said OBU coach Brent Coates.”
OBU plays Saturday against the College of Santa Fe.
Texas College is 3-1.
WOMEN WIN ON ROAD
In the women’s match, Menjun Zang scored both goals as OBU prevailed, 2-0. Zang, a 2006 honorable mention All-America, scored in the 18th minute with an assist from Courtney Anderson and added the second goal in the 90th minute with help from Maddison Nelson.
Freshman Sarah Robinson got the shutout.
“I think we outshot them about 38-1,” Coates said. “Their keeper played unbelievably well.”
OBU will play Saturday at Texas-Brownsville.
