OKLAHOMA CITY — Cydney Ramirez and Niki Haddad of Shawnee rang up three victories Friday to capture the No. 1 doubles championship of the Guthrie Tournament.
After posting straight-set victories over Edmond Santa Fe and Guthrie, Ramirez and Haddad defeated the Edmond North entry 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 for the crown.
“They played an outstanding match against a good Edmond North team,” Shawnee coach Terry Woodward said. “That Edmond team won a 6A state championship last year at No. 2 doubles.”
Edmond North captured Friday’s team crown in the girls’ competition while Shawnee was the runner-up. Seminole was third, followed by Midwest City.
Shawnee’s No. 1 singles entry, Bailey Calder, captured her first two matches before falling to Ann Pepper of Edmond North in the finals, 6-2, 6-2. “Bailey played very well,” Woodward said.
Kristen Clingan finished third after going 2-1, including wins over a John Marshall foe and a Seminole entry.
The No. 2 SHS doubles team of Taylor Haddad-Taylor Thompson placed second after losing to Edmond North 6-3, 6-3 in the finals.
Shawnee was without the services of Callie Hollis, who is in Florida on a school band trip.
Shawnee’s boys had two absentees as Anthony Davis and Travis Whitmore are also on the Florida excursion.
Kenton McGalliard, normally the No. 1 singles performer, was pressed into No. 1 doubles action with Amar Chandra. Following an opening-round 6-0, 6-0 win over John Marshall, the SHS duo prevailed in three sets (7-6, 6-7, 6-2) over Guthrie. Shawnee fell to Edmond North in the finals, 6-1, 6-3.
The Wolves were void at No. 1 singles. At No. 2 singles, Chris Williamson came in seventh with a 2-1 day and the No. 2 doubles team of Garrett Hadley and Bryce Jones went 2-1 en route to a runner-up finish.
“Our boys team did pretty well, considering the kids that were gone,” Woodward said. “It looks like both squads are enjoying themselves.”
Both Shawnee squads will be back in action March 26 when the girls compete at a tourney in Ada while the boys will be at Muskogee.
The squads will flip-flop flop sites on March 27.
