MIDWEST CITY — Ninth-ranked, Class 6A Shawnee needed one of its best games of the year to register a Friday night road win over Class 5A’s top-ranked Carl Albert.
That’s exactly what head coach Wendi Wells got as Shawnee blitzed the Titans 47-27 as Kelsee Grovey exploded for 28 points.
Shawnee (14-4) started fast with a 13-7 first quarter, then outscored the hosts 7-0 over the final eight minutes.
“That’s not only our best road game of the year but our best game period,” Wells said. “Everything was clicking tonight. We didn’t take bad shots and we played good help defense. Carl Albert usually got just one shot. We played really solid defense.”
Grovey, who scored Shawnee’s first 10 points, finished with 17 in the opening half. She chalked up four treys, including two in the first quarter, and hit 85.5 percent (6-of-7) of her free throws on the night.
On Jan. 15, Carl Albert recorded a 47-39 overtime victory at Shawnee.
The Shawnee boys did not fare as well, dropping a 66-52 final for their second loss of the season to the 11th-ranked Titans.
The Wolves, who trailed 17-11 after one quarter and 35-25 at the break, were never able to get closer than 10 points in the second half.
“The kids played really hard and aggressive. They just got beat by a better team,” said SHS coach Ron Arthur, whose Wolves are now 5-13 on the season.
Shawnee was 12-of-16 (75 percent) on foul shots, with Terrance McDonald leading individually at 5-of-6. McDonald, who hit one of Shawnee’s two treys on the night, was the Wolves’ high scorer with 18 points.
Cameron Todd, who added 14 to Shawnee’s cause, was 4-of-6 at the stripe. Taylor Langley hit both of his free throws, and Grant Barrick was 1-of-2.
Langley connected on the Wolves’ other trey en route to finishing with nine points.
Carl Albert’s (12-6) Larry Cunningham led the game’s scoring with 24 points. Teammates J.T. Realmuto and Caleb Price contributed 15 each.
Shawnee’s squads will entertain Harrah Monday night as part of a rescheduled homecoming doubleheader. Homecoming will be held before the 6:30 p.m. boys game. The girls will play at 8 p.m.
