The Holy War on MacArthur Street, pitting the Oklahoma Baptist and St. Gregory’s basketball squads, has been a lopsided affair since its inception in 1997.
OBU’s men are 25-3 against SGU while OBU’s women are 23-3. The Lady Bison have chalked up 13 consecutive victories in the series since St. Gregory’s notched a 73-57 decision on March 1, 2003.
OBU’s Bison own a 10-game winning streak over the Cavaliers. St. Gregory’s last win was a 61-60 squeaker on Jan. 25, 2007.
On paper, there are few reasons to believe there will be dramatic changes tonight when the squads clash at OBU’s Noble Complex. The women’s game is set for 6 p.m. and the men’s contest at 8 p.m.
On the women’s side, OBU, possessor of a 20-2 overall record, is ranked fourth in the country. Coach John McCullough’s squad is tied with Oklahoma City University for first place in the Sooner Athletic Conference at 13-1.
Contrastingly, St. Gregory’s women, at 3-11 in the SAC, are 11th in a 12-team field. St. Gregory’s is 8-14 overall.
The same disparity exists on the men’s side. Coach Doug Tolin’s OBU squad is in second place in the conference at 13-1, is 21-1 overall and is the second-ranked NAIA squad in the land. St. Gregory’s, after dropping its first 13 SAC games, emerged victorious Saturday night against visiting Wayland Baptist. The Cavaliers are 6-13 overall.
St. Gregory’s women put up a fight in this season’s first matchup, dropping a 53-42 decision Dec. 10 at St. Gregory’s.
In that matchup, OBU hit just 32.7 percent of its floor shots but did get 13 points from Taujhnae Travis and 10 from Gabi Mattox. Carletta Hernandez led SGU with 11.
OBU’s women have recorded 44 consecutive victories at the Noble Complex since losing to Northwestern Oklahoma State on Feb. 22, 2007.
The Dec. 10 men’s matchup at St. Gregory’s produced a 100-63 OBU romp as the Bison shot 57 percent from the field. Nate Brumfield of OBU dominated inside, hitting all 12 of his field-goal attempts and missing just one of nine free throws for 32 points. Brumfield was named the SAC Player of the Week after averaging 19.7 points and 10 rebounds in victories over Oklahoma Christian, Wayland Baptist and Lubbock Christian.
Brumfield leads OBU in five categories: scoring (22.6), rebunds (8.3), assists (3.8), steals (2.3) and field-goal percentage (73.2).
Also in double figures for OBU in the first matchup against the Cavaliers were A.J. Hawkins (19), Garrett Steinmetz (17) and Jerrod Tillmon (10).
Fayzon Richey is St. Gregory’s scoring leader with a 16.5 average.
OBU’s men have a 36-game winning streak at the Noble Complex since falling to Oklahoma Christian on Feb. 7, 2008.
