Shawnee’s girls will face one of their most challenging assignments of the season tonight when they travel to Carl Albert.
Shawnee, at 20-0, is ranked No. 1 in Class 5A. Carl Albert is the fourth-ranked squad in 5A and possessor of a 16-4 record.
The tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
“Carl Albert is a great, well-coached team with a lot of great players,” Shawnee coach Wendi Wells said. “It will be a tough matchup for us.”
Gioya Carter of Carl Albert has already committed to Oklahoma despite being just a junior.
“She is a do-it-all kid with great talent,” Wells said. “She can also shoot the 3-pointer.”
Wells also lauded the talents of Aalyah Sebock and Toni Cheadle of Carl Albert.
“Sebock is a great spot-up shooter,” Wells said. “She has had multiple games where she has had four or five 3-pointers.
“Cheadle is a tall, lanky kid who rebounds extremely well, is very athletic and can take you to the hole.”
Wells said Carl Albert would likely be Shawnee’s toughest game of the season.
“Carl Albert has been really hyping this game up,” Wells said. “It would be great if we had a big crowd there for us.
“If you take a big crowd on the road with you, it kind of offsets the home team’s advantage and also shows that your school is behind you.”
Tuesday’s victory at Ponca City assured the Lady Wolves of their second consecutive regular season with 20 or more wins.
In tonight’s second game, Carl Albert’s top-ranked boys, owners of a 17-3 mark, will entertain Shawnee’s 20th-ranked Wolves, possessors of a 9-11 record.
The game will tip off at approximately 8 p.m.
Following tonight’s contests, both Shawnee squads will have two home games remaining in the regular season — Feb. 14 opposite Noble and Feb. 17 against Chickasha.
It will be the first matchup of the season between the Shawnee and Carl Albert squads.
