The Shawnee YMCA is making a move into the “Pop Warner Football Association,” and registrations will be accepted through July 31 for teams playing this fall.
Shawnee’s teams will play from the Oklahoma City area, and teams can consist of players from Shawnee and surrounding communities.
Pop Warner has active programs in 42 states, and is the only national youth sports organization that requires its participants to perform adequately in the classroom before permitting them to play. Bo Bohuslavicky, with the Shawnee YMCA, said this gives participants a sense of responsibility and an appreciation for academics and athletics that will help them develop later in life. The program also enforces a strict weight and age matrix that reduces the risk and reality of injuries.
Pop Warner offers league champions that will have the opportunity to compete in regionals, and the regional winner will advance to a National Championship at the Disney’s Wide World of Sports in Florida. The program also offers Academic All-American status, which is rewarded on different levels (national, regional and league).
Registrations are being taken at the Shawnee YMCA, and practice cannot start until Aug. 1. A preseason game will be played at the end of August, and the season will begin in September.
