OKLAHOMA CITY —

U.S. Rep. Mary Fallin is engaged and plans to marry an attorney from Edmond, her office confirmed on Thursday.

The Oklahoma Republican on Tuesday accepted the marriage proposal from Wade Christensen, an attorney and constituent who flew to Washington to pop the question, said Nate Webb, Fallin's chief of staff.

In a statement released by Fallin, she said Christensen made the surprise trip to Washington and met her at the Lincoln Memorial.

"I thought I was meeting my close friend, Margaret Ann, for a tour and dinner afterwards," Fallin said. "But when I arrived in the rain and dark, he was waiting alone at the Memorial to surprise me and knelt down on his knee to propose.

"He is a wonderful man and a long time acquaintance from college days."

No wedding date has been set.

Fallin, 53, and Christensen, 54, both attended Oklahoma State University, and both have been married previously.

Fallin is a GOP candidate for Oklahoma governor in 2010.
