Calls to Shawnee police about a suspect driving a red SUV and burglarizing vehicles in store parking lots resulted in a lieutenant stopping a vehicle and finding a juvenile with several handguns and stolen property.
Lt. Mason Wilson’s report shows the teen, a high school student, is a suspect on charges of vehicle burglary, possession of stolen property and possession of firearms.
The report shows Wilson noticed the suspect vehicle backing away from a store in the 700 block of West Ayre, so a traffic stop was conducted in that parking lot.
The 17-year-old was told to place his hands in plain sight, but when he allegedly reached into the back seat, the teen was removed from the vehicle, the report shows. As officers worked the traffic stop, the woman who called police about her purse being stolen at a nearby parking lot arrived and made a positive identification of the juvenile as the suspect, according to the report.
Wilson observed a handgun on the back seat and the woman reported it was her purse that was sitting in the front passenger seat of the teen’s SUV.
The report indicates the juvenile was arrested in connection with two vehicle burglaries; his vehicle was impounded.
During inventory of the vehicle, police located a rifle bag containing a .223 rifle with scope, a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun and a .45 caliber handgun with a 32-round clip, along with the .22 revolver that was initially observed in the back seat. Officers also found relating ammunition.
According to the report, the juvenile told police the .22 caliber was his property, but that the other weapons belonged to a family member.
The teen also reportedly told officers the purse was in the Atwood’s parking lot under a parked vehicle, the report shows, but allegedly told officers that a pull-out stereo and radar detector were stolen items, although he couldn’t say which stolen property belonged to which vehicle.
The weapons and those items were logged into evidence.
While at the police station, the teen reportedly told police that all the guns were bought at a gun show and belonged to him, the report reads. He was released to his mother on a promise to appear in juvenile court.
The teen did tell officers that the weapons had been his vehicle while it was parked at Shawnee High School.
