Emergency responders worked a traffic accident with two reported fatalities on Interstate 40 Thursday night, where three helicopter ambulances responded and transported several other critical patients to an Oklahoma City hospital.
The accident was reported in the eastbound lanes of I-40 at mile marker 198 in Seminole County.
According to scanner reports, REACT Emergency Medical Service paramedics at the scene said they had two fatalities and “multiple criticals” when they asked for three different helicopters to respond to the scene from various areas in central Oklahoma.
Scanner reports by helicopter medics also said one of the patients being transported had been ejected from the vehicle. The critical patients were en route to OU Medical Center.
Eastbound lanes were shut down as crews worked the scene, with traffic halted and backed up for at least six miles. At 10 p.m., emergency crews were still trying to divert eastbound traffic off I-40 at SH 9A.
The accident came on the eve of the three-day Fourth of July holiday weekend.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol was working the accident scene. No other information was available at press time. Watch for updates.
