On Valentine’s Day my dad would always stop by Jim Griffith’s Campus Drug and carry in four satin heart shape boxes of candy. He always said that you give sweets to the sweet.
On Feb. 9, 1981, our daughter Meghan was born and we had only been home from the hospital just a couple of days before Valentine’s Day. My husband Mike had always been very good about sending flowers on special days and every opening day on the wildlfe calendar. I knew that Valentine’s Day was coming up but I wasn’t worried because my wonderful husband had everything under control and he didn’t need any hints even though our household was experiencing some big adjustments.
Valentine’s Day came and I patiently waited for the Graves Floral delivery truck to pull into the driveway and time was running out. About 5 p.m. the florist finally came and instead of handing me a dozen roses the delivery person handed my me a pot of yellow tulips. I told the delivery person that he had made a big mistake and that I was getting roses! He said, “lady I just deliver them,” and that I would need to take the matter up with my husband. I took the pot of yellow tulips and sat them down on a table and decided to go ahead and open the envelope and began to read the card that said “to my girls.” My disappointment quickly left when I realized that I had received something better than roses, the best Valentine’s Day gift, was a new baby girl!
I still have the card and it’s okay to get tulips!
