My most memorable Christmas was 25 years ago. I was a single mom with two daughters. I became sick at work one day and had to go to the emergency room. I was admitted to the hospital and given a blood transfusion. My doctor said he was pretty sure I would have to have a hysterectomy. About the end of the next week I was scheduled for surgery and told I would be off work for six more weeks. I had already missed a week. Because I was a self employed hairdresser, when I was off work my pay stopped. So needless to say, I was quite concerned as to how I would pay my bills.
I had the surgery about 10 days before Christmas. While I was in the hospital, each day I received so many cards and flowers I couldn’t believe it. The lady that owned State Beauty Supply at that time came to visit one day with a tote bag full of little gift items and also gave me a pedicure. What a surprise! When I was able to go home, customers, friends and neighbors brought food galore and more flowers. Then I started receiving cards with money in them, that was even more unbelievable.  Most of  the cards said that God laid it on their heart to do that. Talk about being touched. One group of friends and customers went together and bought me a garage door opener. I also received a love offering from my church. I was speechless. The lady that brought it said “Don’t say anything just take it and use it.” With the help of my parents and all these caring people I was able to pay my bills, the bills of my beauty shop and buy a hot water heater. Thank you just didn’t seem adequate. I hope all those acts of kindness made me a better person. One thing I am very sure of, I will never forget that Christmas!
