It was August of 1945 just as WWII was coming to an end. Carl Haley had been serving his country for 2 1/2 years in the South Pacific.
Finally, the news came that he could return home to his precious family. His date of arrival was to be December 26.
Anxiously, his father and uncle rushed to the train station that December 26 to meet Carl. Leaving Carl’s young bride, Irene, at home along with their baby, Marsha and Carl’s mother, Olga.
Olga was busy preparing the family Christmas dinner while Irene tended to little Marsha and cleaned the home. All were anticipating Carl’s homecoming. Olga’s cooking filled the home with wonderful scents as Irene turned her attention to the front porch. No corner of that home went untouched. Irene grabbed the broom and began sweeping the front porch. Irene’s head was down watching each stroke of that broom making certain the home was spotless when all of a sudden appeared two feet in her line of sight-unmistakably clad in Army boots! Her eyes gazed upward and there stood her beloved Carl. He wanted to see his wife before anyone else. He wanted her to be the first to see him too. Immediately hugs and kisses and tears of joy filled that front porch. Poor little Marsha cried to. Not quite understanding what was going on and who was this man? She was only 3 months old when he’d left to serve his country.
Finally, when all the excitement had settled a hearty Christmas dinner was enjoyed by all. It was a very Merry Christmas they would never forget.
