SHAWNEE, Okla. —

I had a regular checkup and mammogram July 17, 2001 as I had done since surgery in 1974. Up to this point the reports had been clear.
However, this time we were called to come in for additional testing. These included needle biopsy, lumpectomy and biopsy of surrounding tissue then the news: CANCER!
More tests followed to be sure there were no other invading cells.
I wrote to friends, “It is easy to say we love and serve the Lord when things are going good and quite another continuing to love and serve Him in troubled times.
These are troubled times so pray for us to have increased faith, strength and peace as we submit to His will in our lives.”
The mastectomy was on Aug. 13, 2001, our 51st wedding anniversary, followed by oral chemo, which contributed to low blood platelets.
The doctor changed to another oral chemo which caused numerous side effects.
With advice from physicians and family, all were discontinued.
I really cannot say that this was the “most devastating news” in my life but one that caused us to trust more fully in Him who holds our future in His hands.
We had come through the loss of three children and a life-changing accident in 1991, so this just seemed like another “bump” along the road of life.
I still go for checkups and annual mammograms and can’t say we don’t have anxieties.
However, cancer came uninvited in 2001 and we know it can come again, so we simply trust our future to God.
