This isn’t about a favorite teacher, parent, boy scout leader, etc. My niece, Tabitha Baptiste, (19 at the time) and I were traveling to Braum’s on a Saturday evening around 8 p.m. to get her son (1 ½ at the time) some ice cream. It was cold outside, so we didn’t take him and I told the baby I would be right back with his ice cream.
We were traveling North on Tucker when an 18 year-old kid traveling east on Grant Street ran a stop sign and t-boned my vehicle. He was traveling around 60 miles per hour.
After we got stopped and were conscious, both of us could smell gas. We came to realize we had stopped right on top of a gas meter in a front yard. Neither of us had seat belts on so we were pretty banged up.
Tabitha had blood all over her face and in her hair but, she kept trying to get help while every minute coming back to check on me. I could not get out of the car. I knew something was wrong since my leg would not move. Not any of the neighbors would open their doors to come help. I kept telling Tabitha to leave me and get down the road.
She had a baby at home that needed her. She wouldn’t leave me. Being a Certified Nurses Aid (CNA) at the age of 16, she finally pulled me out of the car and carried me across the yard. There were still ice patches around on the grass from the storm that had just come through.
She didn’t want to get me dirty by laying me in the mud puddle so she laid me on the ice. Which was very cold and I was griping at her at the time. But, doctors later told us that probably saved me from having a blood transfusion.
I was transferred to Baptist Hospital due to my injuries where I stayed for 10 days. I had broken my pelvis in three places, separated my hips, cracked a rib, bruised my elbow, bruised my bladder. I also had 13 stitches around my eye.
Tabitha had five staples in her head. When my nephew came to see me in the hospital five days later, he asked me for his ice cream so my mom went to Braum’s and got both of us an ice cream.
Along with the rescue squad and the ER here in Shawnee, Tabitha is my hero. I remember thinking that I’m going to die in this car and I can’t even tell my mom that I love her one more time. Tabitha wouldn’t leave me. She was hurt and with the blood she couldn’t see very well herself. But, she kept trying to get help. And when no one would help, she took control herself.
