The March 7 wildfire that ravaged Woodward, Harper and Beaver counties as well as parts of the Texas panhandle and southwestern Kansas burned more than a million acres and claimed the lives of thousands of livestock. It has also showcased the best in people, as volunteers throughout the region and across the nation have been donating hay, transportation, labor and money to help those affected meet emergency needs in terms of animal well-being, facility restoration and environmental stewardship. The Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service and, indeed, much of DASNR has been filling important roles in coordinating hay relief and ensuring information about much-needed best management practices are readily available.
