Four of the five area high school football teams with a chance to make the playoffs qualified for the postseason.
North Rock Creek got a win but suffered a series of unfortunate events that kept them out of the playoffs by only one point.
The Cougars went on the road and beat Anadarko by 15 – the maximum number of playoff differential points allowed. That’s all the Cougars could do. Pauls Valley beat Purcell by seven and Kingfisher lost to Plainview leaving all three teams with a 4-3 record with two spots available. Pauls Valley had 33 playoff points to take the third place spot and Kingfisher losing only 15-13 to Plainview left them with 27 playoff points compared to NRC’s 26.
The bad breaks that cost the Cougars a playoff spot followed a season of injuries and illnesses. North Rock Creek fought until the final whistle in Week Ten and one point cost them a playoff spot that could have been theirs if any of those bad breaks hadn’t hurt their chances.
Shawnee and Chandler were already in the playoffs. The Wolves lost to McAlester but they still get a chance in the postseason. Shawnee heads to Del City Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
Chandler is the only area team to host a playoff game. The home field advantage will be a big one. The visitors coming to Chandler are having to come all the way from Hugo. The Lions went 6-1 in district after beating Dewey 35-6 this week.
Hugo placed third in District 2A-3, just one spot ahead of Bethel. Bethel beat Heavener 52-15 on the road Friday to claim the final spot in the district. The Wildcats are headed to Metro Christian. Metro Christian is undefeated this season and their closest game in the last eight weeks was a 35-0 decision over Chandler – who took second place in District 2A-4.
Seminole also made it into the playoffs with a 20-14 win over Victory Christian Thursday night. The Chieftains finished the season 7-3 and will head to Heritage Hall for the first round of playoff action. Heritage Hall is 9-1 and their only loss was in Week One to undefeated Lincoln Christian.
