Shawnee Public Schools is preparing to welcome students back for a new school on Aug. 14.
The district’s Back-to-School website has information at: https://www.shawnee.k12.ok.us/page/back-to-school
There are some notable policy updates and changes taking place for this school year, along with construction updates, which are outlined below.
Event/Bag Policy:
Shawnee Public Schools has implemented a new district-wide event policy for the 2025–2026 school year, effective immediately. The policy applies to all school-sponsored events across the district, including those at elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as any events hosted by the district off-site.
Key updates include a new ban on outside food and drink and updated bag restrictions. Only small clutches or wallets (no larger than 4” x 7”) or clear, one-gallon resealable plastic bags will be allowed. Backpacks, oversized totes, and mesh or tinted bags are prohibited. All bags will be subject to visual inspection. Items such as coolers, drones, indoor noisemakers, and inflatables are also not permitted, and there is no re-entry once a guest exits the venue.
The district says the changes are designed to ensure a safe, consistent experience for all students, staff, and spectators.

Disconnect to Reconnect:
Shawnee Public Schools has launched a new “Disconnect to Reconnect” policy in line with Oklahoma state law, requiring students to keep personal electronic devices powered off and put away during the school day, from the first bell to dismissal. This includes cell phones, smartwatches, earbuds, and similar devices. The goal is to reduce distractions, support student focus, and encourage stronger connections in the classroom. Families can reach students by calling the school office, and students may request to use a school phone if needed.
Students may be asked to place their device in a Yondr bag for the remainder of the day, if they have their device out during instructional time. Yondr has created a patented pouch and unlocking base that provides a standardized system for students who have out personal electronic devices. If a student has a personal electronic device out, they will be given a Yondr pouch—a secure, lockable case for storing personal devices. Students are responsible for keeping it in good condition. They will go to designated stations to get the Yondr pouch unlocked at the end of the school day.

Construction Updates:
Thanks to the support of Shawnee voters, Horace Mann, Will Rogers, and Jefferson Elementary Schools all underwent major renovations this summer. These campuses received new flooring, updated bathrooms, fresh paint, new windows, and other facility improvements. District-wide, new intercom systems were installed in the elementary schools to enhance both communication and campus security. At Jim Thorpe Stadium, the new press box is progressing well and we’re anxiously awaiting it’s completion. Shawnee High School also saw improvements with a newly resurfaced parking lot.
Looking ahead, design work is underway for the Stucker and Ag buildings, and construction on the new tennis facility is expected to begin soon.
Student Ticket Policy:
Shawnee Public Schools has announced updated ticket procedures for student attendance at home athletic events during the 2025-2026 school year.
Middle school and high school students in good standing with their principal may receive one free ticket to high school home games, which must be picked up before or on game day. Students may purchase a $5 student ticket from their principal to attend home games for the other site.
These new procedures are designed to ensure a safe, structured, and student-supportive environment at all SPS athletic events.
New Teacher Orientation was on August 5-6. SPS welcomed 50 new teachers to the district.
Leadership Update:
Shawnee Public Schools is excited to begin the school year with a refreshed leadership team. Superintendent Dr. Jason James is entering the year in full stride, focused on continuing the district’s forward momentum. On August 4th, Dr. Mike Dominguez officially joined the district as Assistant Superintendent, bringing more than three decades of educational experience to the role.
Shawnee High School also welcomes two new leaders: Bobby Cook as Head Principal and Tara Cook as Assistant Principal. Together, they bring a shared commitment to student success and a strong vision for the future of Shawnee High School.
Student IDs for Bus Ridership
Shawnee Public Schools is enhancing student safety with an expanded bus rider ID system. Elementary students began using the system last semester, and this school year, secondary students will join the program.
Students who ride the bus will scan their ID cards each time they board and exit, improving security, tracking ridership, and supporting better communication with families. Elementary student ID cards are attached to backpacks for easy use.
Parents are encouraged to download the MyRide K-12 app to receive real-time notifications when their child gets on or off the bus.
