Dr. Stephen Banks, a Shawnee physician, has been nominated as a candidate for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society 2008 Man of the Year.
Banks’ office is at Shawnee Medical Center Clinic, where his nomination kicks off an eight-week, statewide fundraising competition.
Kim Steen, marketing coordinator for SMCC, said the titles of Man and Woman of the Year are awarded on a philanthropic basis. Every dollar raised counts as one vote and the candidates with the most votes at the end of the competition are awarded the title of 2008 Man and Woman of the Year.
“This fundraising campaign hits extremely close to home for our SMCC family,” Steen said. “Dr. Banks was diagnosed with leukemia last May. He is a true testament of someone overcoming difficult times with strong faith and a positive attitude.”
Steen said the SMCC physicians and staff will host a number of fundraising efforts throughout the campaign period. Some of these include popcorn sales each Friday in the SMCC lobby; a bake sale May 20; a book sale May 12-16; and a silent auction May 14 and 15.
The public is invited to the activities and proceeds will go to support Banks’ candidacy and fundraising efforts. Tax-deductible donations also will be accepted online at www.active.com/donate/okmwoy/stephenbanks.
