Paced by a runner-up finish from its No. 1 doubles entry, Shawnee’s girls finished fifth Friday at the Shawnee Tennis Tournament held at various courts throughout Shawnee.
Cydney Ramirez and Lauren Alt, Shawnee’s No. 1 doubles entry, went 3-1, losing in the finals, 6-0, 6-1, to Class 5A Enid.
Alt and Ramirez posted earlier victories over Norman North, Ardmore and Putnam City North.
“I’m very pleased with our No. 1 doubles team,” Shawnee head coach Terry Woodward said. “They were seeded fifth and made it to the finals.”
Shawnee’s No. 2 doubles unit of Bailey Calder and Taylor Thompson came in seventh after recording a 2-2 record. Calder-Thompson notched victories over Skiatook and Byng, the latter coming in the seventh-place match.
The Lady Wolves’ Taylor Haddad, competing at No. 1 singles, also went 2-2 to finish seventh.
Haddad posted a first-round victory over Chelsea Nelson of Henryetta and also got an injury-default decision over Tecumseh in the seventh-place matchup.
The No. 2 singles entrant for Shawnee, Taylor King, came in 10th with a 2-2 mark.
After losing a first-round decision to Henryetta, King rebounded for consecutive victories over Hannah Robles of Norman North and Ashley Trammell of Ardmore.
“Overall, I’m pretty pleased with the day,” Woodward said. “We may have ended up higher if we hadn’t left out Niki Haddad.
“We’ve had her out all week (hamstring) and saving her for regionals.”
Shawnee compiled 38 points in its fifth-place finish. Putnam City North captured the team title with 58 points, followed by runner-up Ada with 50. Enid was third with 48 and Byng came in fourth with 46.
Seminole was sixth with 37 points and Tecumseh came in ninth with 28.
Shawnee’s girls will compete Monday at a regional tournament in McAlester.
Shawnee’s boys will compete today in further action at the Shawnee Tennis Tournament.
