With its No. 2 singles entrant and No. 1 doubles team capturing championships, Shawnee’s girls staved off McAlester Monday for a Class 4A regional tournament tennis title.
Shawnee posted 31 points with runner-up McAlester at 30. Durant was third in the eight-team field with 27.
Top-seeded Niki Haddad, playing despite a high hamstring pull, went 2-0 at No. 2 singles, including a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Amanda Gomes of Durant in the finals.
The top-seeded No. 1 doubles unit of Lauren Alt and Cydney Ramirez also went 2-0, including a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over a Durant team.
No. 1 singles performer and third-seeded Taylor Haddad of Shawnee notched a 3-1 record en route to a third-place finish.
And second-seeded Bailey Calder and Taylor Thompson, operating at No. 2 doubles, went 2-1 for a runner-up achievement.
“The girls did a good job,” Shawnee head coach Terry Woodward said. “Everyone lived up to their seed. That’s what everyone had to do to win the regional. The kids played hard. We dominated at No. 1 doubles.”
Shawnee’s girls will compete in the 4A state tournament Friday and Saturday at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center. Shawnee’s first action Friday will be at 11 a.m.
The SHS boys will complete today in the rain-delayed Putnam City North Tournament, The action, which will begin at 3 p.m., was originally scheduled for April 2.
