Gouls and goblins, princesses and fairies, they’re almost ready to come out and knock on many strangers and neighbors doors to ask that age-old question, “trick-or-treat.”  Friday October 31 is Halloween and trick-or-treaters are welcome to roam the streets of the Shawnee area from 5:30pm till 9:00pm.  Here are some ways to make sure those little tikes stay safe.

1.  Make sure you check the Sex Offender Registry for you area.  You may want to make a note of the addresses of these offenders and skip them.  You can see the registry here:  OKLAHOMA SEX OFFENDER REGISTRY

2.  Smaller children should always be accompanied by an adult.

3.  Try to stay in areas that you are more familiar with.

4.  Equip your children and yourself with hand-held two-way radios.  You can purchase these many places here in Shawnee.  Prices range from around $29 into the hundreds.  Here’s a few places to get them:

Walmart

Staples

Kmart

RadioShack

5.  Check the candy for tampering.

6. Teach children to only go to houses with a porch light shining and to never enter a stranger's house under any circumstance.

7. Make certain kids know to walk on the left side of the road, facing oncoming traffic when sidewalks are not available.
You can still have fun on Halloween while being safe.  Above all teach your children to respect other trick-or-treaters, traffic, and other’s property.

I hope you all have a fun and safe Halloween this year.
