Shawnee firefighters responded to Shawnee Milling Company, 201 S. Broadway, early Tuesday morning for a reported fire. When crews arrived, Battalion Chief David Short said there was a smoldering fire in a hammer mill machine, but it was contained after mill personnel took proper precautions and shut down the machine. Employees exited the mill for about 15 minutes as firefighters sprayed five to 10 gallons of water on the unit and removed charred corn meal from that machine, Short said. No injuries were reported.
