Nine journalists will be inducted into this year's Hall of Fame membership.

The Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame will induct nine outstanding journalists at a celebratory luncheon set for 11:45 a.m., April 18 in the University of Central Oklahoma’s Nigh University Center (NUC) Ballroom.

The 2013 inductees include James Coburn, reporter for The Edmond Sun; Joe Hancock, publisher of the Hobart Democrat-Chief; Joe Hight, editor of the Colorado Springs Gazette; John Klein, sports columnist for the Tulsa World; Mike McCarville of The McCarville Report: Mary Mélon, president and publisher of The Journal Record; Tom Muchmore, publisher of The Ponca City News; Jerry Laizure, photographer of The Norman Transcript who died late last year; and Oliver C. Murray, photojournalist for WKY/KFOR-TV.

"This annual ceremony has become an informal homecoming for honorees and families. The hall includes a virtual 'who's who' of Oklahoma journalism, and the crowd will be filled with giants of the industry," said Terry Clark, Ed.D., professor in Central’s Mass Communication Department and director of the Hall of Fame.

The ceremony will also include the first Oklahoma Press Association Award to a student with outstanding promise in newspaper journalism and the presentation of the Brian J. Walke Scholarship in Journalism Ethics to a student at Central.

Mark Thomas, executive vice president of the Oklahoma Press Association, will serve as Master of Ceremonies for the event, with welcoming remarks from Central’s President Don Betz. 

A committee composed of members of the working press and the Hall of Fame selects honorees. Framed citations of honorees are on display in the Hall of Fame, located in the NUC. 

Founded in 1971 by former UCO Journalism chairperson Dr. Ray Tassin, the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame is supported by funding from UCO, The Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation and The Oklahoma Newspaper Foundation.
