Pottawatomie County sheriff’s deputies have recovered a stolen tractor and trailer.

Undersheriff Travis Palmer said the tractor, a 1950s model Massey Ferguson, had just been repaired and was still on a trailer when that trailer was stolen from a residence in north Pottawatomie County.

The owner of the tractor was later driving on SH 102, Palmer said, when a pickup pulling a trailer pulled out in front of him. It came as a surprise to the owner who noticed it was his stolen tractor, Palmer said.

He called deputies and followed the truck until he lost sight of it before deputies arrived and located the truck, boxed it in and made a traffic stop near Clearpond and Drummond.

Palmer said deputies arrested Michael Shirey, 30, at that scene on a complaint of possession of stolen property. Formal charges have not been filed in this case.

The undersheriff said the owner of the tractor was glad to have it recovered. Deputies also impounded the pickup Shirey was driving, Palmer said.

Palmer reminds residents with trailers to keep them secured.

Shirey remains jailed in the Pottawatomie County Public Safety Center, where he’s being held on $10,000 bond.
