Ash Wednesday services planned.
First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) will observe Ash Wednesday, March 5, with a special service at 6 p.m. The church is located at 1625 N. Broadway, and the service is open to the public.
Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent and takes its name from the ceremonial imposition of ashes on the foreheads of worshippers as a sign of human sin and mortality. This is an ancient tradition that goes back at least to the tenth century, and communicates the human condition before God by solemn word and sign.
The ashes have added significance since they are prepared from burning the palm fronds that were carried into the sanctuary on Palm Sunday of last year.
The service will be brief and focuses on scripture, prayer, and meditation prior to the imposition of the ashes. In the tradition of the Disciples of Christ, this is one worship service where communion is not served.
The service marks the beginning Lent, which is a forty-day journey toward Easter. Lent is a time of self-examination, confession, and penitence.
