MALIBU, Calif. – The Oklahoma Baptist men and women’s swimming and diving teams competed in the Malibu Invitational hosted by Pepperdine University Friday and Saturday.

OBU qualified a total of 79 swimmers and diving events for the 2015 NAIA Swimming & Diving National Championships in the season-opening event.

The women’s team featured six swimming event winners and both the one and three-meter diving event champion. A total of 30 Lady Bison met a qualifying standard at the meet. The men’s team won 14 events and had 49 qualifiers.

“It was a great meet to start off the season, the swimming was nice and the weather was great,” said OBU head coach Sam Freas. “It was good swimming against team we don’t normally see when we compete.”

Laura Galarza won the women’s 50-yard butterfly with a final time of 25.59. Fernando Morillas finished first on the men’s side with a time of 23.09.

Daniel Ramirez took the men’s 50-yard backstroke in 23.10. OBU finished took the top five spots in the event, and had seven of the top 10 times.

Morillas took the men’s 50-yard breaststroke, finishing in 26.27 for the Bison.

Galarza finished first in the women’s 50-yard freestyle with a qualifying time of 24.07, and Logan Lassley won the men’s version of the event while qualifying in 20.59. The men took five of the top six spots in the event.

Galarza won her third event of the meet, taking the 100 fly in a qualifying time of 58.10.

The women’s 100 back was won by Ines Remersaro with a qualifying time of 59.41, while Andrew Nelson qualified with a winning time of 52.23. The men took the top four spots in the event.

Morillas took his third event when he finished the 100 breast in a qualifying time of 56.42.

Galarza won the women’s 100 free with a qualifying time of 52.31. The OBU women took three of the top four spots in the event. The men’s event was won by Ramirez in 44.96, one of seven Bison in the top 10.

The OBU men took first in the 300-yard freestyle relay with a final time of 2:08.35, just edging out the OBU “B” team, which finished in 2:11.33.

Ramirez won the men’s 200 fly with a qualifying time of 1:51.38.

Remersaro took the 200 back title with a qualifying time of 2:05.60, while Nelson won for the men, qualifying in 1:53.26.

Morillas came away with another victory in the 200 breast, finishing in 2:03.47, which was a qualifying time.

Sossa finished first in the men’s 200 free with a qualifying time of 1:42.63. The Bison swept the top three times in the event, and finished with eight of the top 11 times.

Genesis Veliz won the women’s one and three-meter diving. She finished with a qualifying score of 251.15 in the one-meter event, and a 262.85 in the three-meter diving final.

Juan Cuellar took the men’s 1,650-yard freestyle with a qualifying time of 16:39.95.

Nelson finished on top in the men’s 500 free with a time of 4:45.33, which met the qualifying standard. OBU took the top three spots in the event.

Next up for the Bison swimmers is the Hendrix Relays in Conway, Ark. on Friday, Oct. 31.
