Behind solid performances on the mound, St. Gregory’s posted a season-opening sweep of Central Christian (Kan.) Friday afternoon at Bill Nicklas Field. The Opening Day wins marked the first time in more than 10 years the Cavaliers have started the season 2-0.

Cavalier pitchers combined to give up only two earned runs on the day, limiting a Tiger team coming off their best offensive season since 2010.

In the opener, St. Gregory’s Vincente Rodas gave up only one run on three hits over six innings in a 5-1 win. He struck out five and walked two in a 103-pitch effort. A.J. Strom closed it out with a scoreless seventh.

The Cavs broke a 1-1 tie in the third on an RBI groundout by Nick Hoffman. The home team added three more in the fourth to create some separation. That inning was highlighted by J.J. Perez’s two-RBI single.

Perez and Peter Daley each finished with two RBIs in the game. Leadoff hitter Jordan Weber was 2-for-2.

Tyler Hebert nearly went the distance in a 3-2 win in the nightcap. He gave up one earned run on five hits in 6-2/3 innings. Hebert gave way to closer Joseph Baltrip, who recorded the final out to pick up the save.

St. Gregory’s never trailed in the contest, posting a 3-spot in the first inning. Jesse Foster capped the frame with a two-RBI single to right. Central Christian made it interesting after scoring two in the seventh, but pinch runner Stephen Boedeker was tagged out after overrunning third base to end the game.

The Cavs and Tigers are scheduled to conclude their three-game set Saturday at Bill Nicklas Field. Game time is set for noon.
