St. Anthony Shawnee Hospital, with the support of Avedis Foundation, hosted a free, health awareness activity Wednesday.

The event, associated with the American Heart Association’s National Walking Day, marked a significant community date. As participants readied, Mayor Wes Mainord proclaimed April 1, 2015 as National Walking Day in Shawnee.

Before walkers began the cemented journey around the airport, Avedis Foundation distributed pedometers. Foundation president and CEO Michelle Briggs said approximately 30 community members were present.

“It was a wide variety,” she said of demographics, noting even toddlers took on the challenge.

Mainord added, “It was a pretty good turnout.”

According to the American Heart Association, physical inactivity doubles the risk of heart disease. Hospital president Chuck Skillings said the hospital is committed to improving community health and detailed the reasoning behind National Walking Day.

“It’s a great way to remind our community that something as simple as walking each day can have a big impact on your health,” he said.
