Shawnee Splash, a downtown multi-feature recreational experience, is set to open May 23. As construction advances, new pool revelations offer insight into the completed project.

Now visible at the Woodland Park facility are two slides: one cherry red, the other a shade of aqua blue. City Director of Operations James Bryce detailed the functions of each.

“One is real wide, we call it a family slide, and three people can go down at the same time,” Bryce said. “The other one is a flume slide with a couple of twists.”

Adding to the fun is a pool persona. Otto, the cartoon character featured in Shawnee Splash’s logo, will be peppered throughout the park experience.

John Ayers, pool committee chairman and owner of Ayers Marketing & Advertising, described the design’s significance.

“Otto is a young, likeable, somewhat mischievous kid who loves the new municipal pool,” he said. “He will appear in all signs and promotional materials, going out of his way to help create a fun and exciting atmosphere throughout the swim season.”

The facility, which formally broke ground in July 2014, is set to include diving boards, a basketball goal, a climbing wall, an interactive play system in the zero-depth entry and a current channel.

Additional amenities include a board/training room for lifeguards or resident parties, showers and restrooms and an expanded concession and kitchen area.

May 24 through Labor Day, the pool will be open seven days a week. Pool hours are noon-8 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and 2-8 p.m. on Sundays.

Admittance options include individual and season passes. Individual pass prices are $4 for youth, ages 3 to 17, and citizens age 55 or older. The adult cost is $5.

Season passes are $40 for citizens age 55 and older, and $50 for individuals. A season pass for a family of four is $130, with each additional person costing $10.

Shawnee Splash’s May 23, 10 a.m. grand opening kicks off Avedis Foundation Health Week. Watch for stories on the activity-filled affair. The pool opens to the public at 2:30 p.m. that day.
