The return of sunshine has allowed for the rescheduling of a community dog walk and Avedis Foundation Health Week event.

Paws in the Park, previously postponed due to weather, is set for Friday, 7-8:30 p.m. Khara Criswell, head trainer at The Doggie Spot, noted rainfall would not further delay the animal-centric affair.

“If it’s raining, I’ll still hold it,” she said. “If it’s lightning, that’s a whole other issue.”

Clear skies are expected. The National Weather Service reports the June 5 forecast is mostly sunny, with a high near 86.

Criswell said the event, designed to promote wellness among people and canine companions, allows community members to do something different.

“A lot of people have pets. Sometimes just getting out and walking with them gives people a change of attitude,” she explained, adding dog walking can help decrease stress.

The walk begins at the dog park at the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center and will utilize part of the airport trail.

“It’s two miles,” Criswell said. “It’s not timed, so you can go at your own pace.”

The free event permits one dog per registrant and requires dogs remain on a leash. Retractable leashes must remain locked. Participants are able to register at the event.

“The first 75 people will get a gift bag,” Criswell detailed.

Demonstrators, vendors and canine stations will enhance the experience.

“We’ll have a station with water bowls and another with a dog kiddie pool and water bowls,” Criswell said.
