Walter Edward Tibbs, age 83, of Shawnee, passed away July 9, 2015.

He was born Jan. 26, 1932, in Tecumseh to John Henry and Rosa Etta (Weston) Tibbs.

Walter was a Logistics officer at Tinker Air Force Base and retired in 1988, after 32 years of service. He proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean Conflict.

Walter served in Pentecostal churches in the Shawnee area, and was currently a member of Living Love Christian Center. He was a licensed minister through the Full Gospel Assemblies.

His hobbies included hunting, fishing, sight-seeing and camping with his family. He also enjoyed singing and playing the guitar. He was a leather craftsman since 1974. Walter enjoyed writing poems, especially of his hospital experiences, writing gospel music lyrics to the tune of country songs. He loved to spend time with his wife, Helen, of almost 60 years. Walter loved going on family vacations and playing with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Helen L. Tibbs, of the home; daughter, Judy L. Boatman and husband, Howard, of Moore; son, Edward H. Tibbs and wife, Sheri, of Norman; five grandsons, Jeff Spriggs, Steven Boatman, Eddie Tibbs, John Boatman, and Justin Tibbs.

He is preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Sue Spriggs; siblings, Ophelia Canfield, Ora Mae O’Neal, and Gary Tibbs. Formal visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, July 13, at the John M. Ireland Funeral Home, in Moore.

Funeral services for Walter will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 14, at Southgate Baptist Church, 740 SW 4th St., in Moore. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, in Norman.

Services are under the direction of the John M. Ireland Funeral Home.
