'It’s a “big” bill, but not so beautiful for many of us' Dear editor, Representative Bice announced that she voted in favor of the “One Big Beautiful Bill.” She favors the bill because she believes that it brings tax relief to Oklahomans, supports families, keeps the border secure, makes our government more efficient while enacting “historic savings to put our nation on a sound fiscal trajectory,” and will “Restore American’s Energy Dominance” by dismantling “burdensome Green New Deal regulations.”She does not mention that, according to the non-partisan Oklahoma Policy Institute, this bill also “threatens the well-being of countless Oklahomans by slashing essential health care and food programs while creating tax shelters for the wealthiest Americans.”One in six Oklahomans’ health care is provided through SoonerCare (Oklahoma’s Medicaid program), but because of the Big Beautiful Bill “almost 15 million low-and-middle income U.S. citizens and lawful residents will become uninsured, including many with SoonerCare.” “Millions more will face higher premiums, copays, out-of-pocket costs, and .

Hello, Shawnee! I hope you have had a nice month of May, despite all the rain. The grass and trees are sure green everywhere, so that is one blessing that the rain brings us! The Shawnee Parks and Recreation Department maintains over 30 parks here in Shawnee, and each one has its own unique features such as trees, shade structures, playground equipment, pavilions, restrooms, benches, sport courts, walking sidewalks, and picnic tables.

CareerTech awards $4.14M in lottery grants, scholarships

The Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education has awarded more than $4.14 million in lottery funds. CareerTech awarded 23 grants worth a total of $1,887,557.75 to 22 technology centers for the 2025-26 school year and 134 grants worth a total of $1,878,996.98 to K-12 school districts for the 2025-26 school year, along with 400 scholarships worth a total of $375,512.42 for the 2024-25 school year.

Family of late Jim Smith accepts citizenship award on his behalf

SHAWNEE, OK — In a heartfelt tribute to a beloved community leader, the late Jim Smith was posthumously honored with the 2025 Alan Haddock Community Citizenship Award at a dinner held last week at the Marty Lewis Safety Center at Gordon Cooper Technology Center. The event brought together family, friends, and supporters to celebrate Smith’s enduring legacy of service to Shawnee and the Canadian Valley District.
