Potawatomi Fire inspire youth in chance Capitol connection

OKLAHOMA CITY – In a heartwarming moment that bridged two worlds and sparked genuine hope, six leadership students from the Central Oklahoma Juvenile Center (COJC) in Tecumseh and one of Oklahoma’s most celebrated sports teams, the Potawatomi Fire, were recognized separately on the floor of the Oklahoma House of Representatives. What began as a formal recognition blossomed into a day of friendship, encouragement and the spark of a potentially life-changing connection.

February Students of the Month named

[EDITOR'S NOTE: Two students are being honored for each month from September to April of the 2024-25 school year, named as nominees for the Best of Tri-County Area Preps Student of the Year award, which will be announced at the News-Star's Preps gala on June 3.] Jannah Shoffner and Kali Martin-Johnson have been named The Shawnee News-Star and CPN Students of the Month for February and are now finalists for the Student of the Year award. Shoffner is a senior at North Rock Creek High School and Martin-Johnson is a senior at Shawnee High School.

The 2024 election victory of President Donald Trump by a majority of the Electoral College votes and a narrow plurality of votes cast at the polls understandably has been a source of great political satisfaction for his partisan base, and for his now captive Republican Party. The committed core of the president’s fervent support has experienced nothing short of jubilation, given the highly confrontational and contentious approach of this leader, especially on social and affirmative action, and immigration issues.
