Shawnee firefighters recently completed training and honed their skills in two critical areas: Ventilation training and New Drive Friction Loss training. As part of the training, firefighters were on the roof, practicing essential ventilation techniques to control fire spread and improve conditions for interior crews.

Sewer main break spurs Commission to OK up to $75K fix

This week, city leaders addressed some unforeseen new business during its Shawnee Municipal Authority meeting; Public Works Director Brad Schmidt alerted the City Commission to an emergency that was discovered over the weekend regarding a sewer main break that would need immediate action, but also commission approval, due to expected cost. Schmidt said staff was called out to the area of Northridge and Beckley, confirming there was a compromised sewer main under a creek crossing.

Teens learn about nursing during OBU summer camp event

During a multi-day summer camp event, 30 students, ages 13-17 discovered what learning at OBU’s School of Nursing is really like: practicing vitals and PPE, reviewing microbiology, touring SSM Health & React EMS, and solving an escape-room challenge in the OBU simulation lab. “OBU’s first Nursing Summer Camp was a tremendous success! I am a long-time master gardener and an administrator on four separate Facebook pages concerning gardening in Oklahoma. This time of year, the pages are inundated with “What is wrong with my tomatoes/peppers/squash? They are rotting on the bottom!” Then comes all the comments/advice: soil needs calcium, crush Tums around them, water or spray with milk, add crushed eggshells, add Epsom’s salt, etc.
