Gardening: What's wrong with my tomatoes?

I am a long-time master gardener and an administrator on four separate Facebook pages concerning gardening in Oklahoma. This time of year, the pages are inundated with “What is wrong with my tomatoes/peppers/squash? They are rotting on the bottom!” Then comes all the comments/advice: soil needs calcium, crush Tums around them, water or spray with milk, add crushed eggshells, add Epsom’s salt, etc.
