Our summer heat has been brutal. A client emailed on Friday: Help! How do I keep my garden alive?!? Here are some tips for the garden during this heat wave: • Hold off on most fertilizer applications.
The Plumeria (Plumeria alba) was frying. The 10-foot-tall tropical white frangipani has spent the past few summers lounging in the greenhouse. It likes to bake in the sun, but this summer’s heat and intense rays were too much. I knew it should have been pruned last year. Oh well. The heat was trapped in the top of the greenhouse. Each day the temperatures rose higher and higher. The Plumeria’s leaves on the highest branches were turning from yellow to brown to gone. We struggled to pull this member of the dogbane family out of the dry sauna and dragged in to a shadier spot near the greenhouse. Only lost one branch, but the Plumeria looks like it has been living rough.
Gardening in extreme heat is no fun, but no matter how hot it gets, you still need to water, weed, and deadhead. When the temperatures hit the 100s which they have been doing since June this year, it’s best to minimize time outdoors for the sake of the gardener as well as the garden.
