A career and technical student from Shawnee won one of the nation’s highest awards at the 2022 SkillsUSA Championships, held in Atlanta, on June 22-23. More than 5,200 students competed at the national showcase of career and technical education. The SkillsUSA Championships is the largest skill competition in the world and covers 1.79 million square feet, equivalent to 31 football fields or 41 acres.
Thomas and Barbara Smith of Shawnee are celebrating 50 years of marriage. Tom and Barbara moved to Shawnee in June of 1972 and were married July 3, 1972 in Carthage, Missouri.
The Biden administration took another step to improve relations with the nation’s nearly 575 Native American tribes by signing an agreement giving the Cherokee Nation greater control over road improvements within its reservation.

Molly Wilson was named as principal of Will Rogers Elementary at a recent Shawnee Board of Education meeting. Wilson will take over the position from Jackie Noble, who was named as director of elementary education for the district at the same meeting.

Theron and Jan Godwin, as most parents, wanted a better life for their children. To them, education was the solution.
