Smith descendant named finalist for 2022 Oklahoma teacher of the year

With almost two decades of experience, Citizen Potawatomi Nation tribal member and Smith family descendant, Kortni Torralba was named one of 12 finalists for 2022 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year by the Oklahoma State Department of Education. She brings a unique skill set and outlook to her position as a therapeutic educator at Moore Alternative School and Treatment.

When “The Score” hosted by Edmund Stone played Friday afternoon, the lead-off song was Judy Garland singing “In your Easter bonnet” from the 1948 movie “Easter Parade.” My father loved that movie. In the spring he would occasionally burst out singing “Easter Parade” then give a big grin. “Oklahoma” ran a close second. Of all the traditions, the parades at Easter go back to the earliest Holy Week in the Christian religion. The first procession was Jesus entering Jerusalem before Passover to commemorate the time the Hebrews were liberated from Egyptian slavery. The second walk was when Jesus carried the cross through Jerusalem to outside the gates beyond the city.
